Evaluation of physiological potencial of watermelon seeds by accelerated aging test
Journal Title: Revista Verde de Agroecologia e Desenvolvimento Sustentável - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 0
Abstract
For a complete analysis of the physiological quality of seeds, there is need for complementary information provided the germination test with vigor tests in order to select the vigorous lots with greater vigor for marketing. The aimed of this study was to evaluate methods of traditional accelerated aging test and modified with saturated and unsaturated saline solution, in order to evaluate the physiological potential of watermelon seeds. Seeds of cultivars Congo and Crimson Sweet, represented by four and five seed lots each one, respectively. To evaluate the watermelon seeds quality were done the following determinations: standard germination test, first count of germination, cold test, emergence speed index, seedling emergence. Accelerated aging test was performed by the following methodologies: traditional, saline solution saturated (40 g NaCl per 100 ml water) and not saturated saline solution (11g NaCl per 100 ml water) at 41⁰C for 48; 72 and 96 hours. Accelerated aging test using unsaturated saline solution or saturated saline solution at 41⁰C for 72 hours, it shows appropriate to assess physiological quality of watermelon seeds, thus becoming a promising test for the evaluation of the vigor expression.
