Evaluation of Routing Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract

Sensor Network are emerging as a new tool for important applications in diverse fields like military surveillance [12],habitat monitoring [13], monitoring and gathering events in hazardous environments[14],surveillance of buildings[15], whether monitoring etc. Wireless sensor networks are formed by a large number of sensor nodes which are commonly known as motes. These motes are small in size and have limited processing power, memory and battery life. Motes typically have sensors such as thermometers attached to them in order to gather data about the physical environment. Collectively nodes are capable of forming wireless ad-hoc networks in order to relay this sensor data throughout the network and to the base station. In this paper we presented an evaluation and comparison of several multi-hop flat based routing protocols like flooding, gossiping and a cluster based protocol LEACH for use with these networks. Implementation is done using TinyOS and TOSSIM simulator. Evaluation and comparison reveals that compared with Flat routing protocols there is low power usage and least delay involved with LEACH protocol.
