Evaluation of Social Phobia, Self-esteem, Anxiety an Depression Levels of Children with Tic Disorders
Journal Title: Turkish Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health - Year 2020, Vol 27, Issue 3
Abstract
Objectives: In this study, we aimed to compare the anxiety, depression, social phobia, and self-esteem levels between the children with Tourette syndrome or tic disorder and healthy ones and to examine their relationship with tic severity. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted with 58 children (including 29 children with Tourette syndrome (TS) or tic disorder for the first time according to DSM-5 criteria and 29 healthy ones) who applied to Mersin University Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic between 01.10.2018 and 01.04.2019. State-trait Anxiety Inventory, Depression Scale for Children, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, Yale General Tic Level Asessment Scale and Çapa Social Phobia Scale for children and adolescents were applied. Groups were compared in terms of social phobia, self-esteem, anxiety, and depression levels. Results: In this study, depression (11.89±6.24, 7.86±4.34 p=0.006), state anxiety (38.72±6.76, 33.68±5.99 p=0.004), trait anxiety (35.03±7.77, 30.17±4.97 p=0.006) and social phobia levels (61.44±14.16, 49.93±11.81 p=0.001) were significantly higher in children with TS or tic disorder compared to healthy ones. Self-esteem (49.93±11.81, 0.51±0.73 p=0.000) was found lower. Also, in this study, it was concluded that the higher tic severity was related to the higher state anxiety level (r=0.402 p=0.031) and the lower self-esteem levels (r=0.483 p=0.008). Conclusion: Clinicians must be aware of depression, anxiety, social phobia, and self-esteem problems that may accompany TS or tic disorder and that these disorders may have negative consequences in more than one area.
