Evaluation of Teacher's Views on Education and School Life of Syrian Children within the Scope of Formal Education

Abstract

With a request for a democratic transition by the regime opponents within the borders of Syria, the southern neighbor of our country, peaceful demonstrations launched in March 2011 and spreading across the country in April 2011 and as a result of the harsh interventions of the regime forces, they have become a civil war and this civil war caused nearly 8 million Syrians to leave their homes. At the head of the countries that are most affected by this migration movement is our country. According to the General Directorate of Immigration of the Ministry of the Interior, there are 2. 255. 299 registered Syrian refugees in our country as of January 2016.While a small number of registered Syrian refugees who entered my country legally were placed in pre-prepared tent cities a large part of it spread throughout the country and is trying to adapt to social life. Syrian refugees who flocked to my country have brought some social, economic and social problems together. At the very beginning of these problems comes the education and language, which is the first condition for harmonizing social life. The students who are in the scope of formal education are placed in public schools and those who are in non-formal education are trying to read and write Turkish through the courses. These studies have showed that the greatest responsibilities are on the teachers. In this research, the views of the teachers regarding the education of the Syrian students placed in formal educational institutions and the problems encountered during the school life were consulted. The purpose of the research is to make inferences by making various evaluations in the light of the opinions of the teachers about the education of the Syrian students and the school life and to try to determine the troubles in the formal educational institutions. In this study, "Semi-structured Interview Form" consisting of five open-ended questions developed by referring to the expert opinion as data collection tool was used. The sample of the research consists of eleven teachers from different branches working in Atatürk Secondary School in Yahyalı District of Kayseri Province. The data obtained from the participants were evaluated by content analysis method. As a result of the research, it was determined that the teachers expressed the problems of the Syrian students in their education, school life, achievement status, friendship, and adaptation to Turkish culture. Various suggestions have been made in order to contribute to the solution of the problems determined by the opinions of the teachers.
