Evaluation of the effectiveness of fissure sealing as presented by Polish authors

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2008, Vol 61, Issue 11

Abstract

Introduction: Materials which seal the occlusal surfaces of back teeth play a significant role in the prevention of caries. They also dramatically impede the development of caries. Aim of the study: To evaluate the effectiveness of various sealants used in prevention of caries, and to compare the relationship between retention of these materials and the degree of reduction of caries – in given periods. Materials and methods: The analysis evaluated research reports by Polish authors published between 1979 – 2004 to determine the effectiveness of caries reduction in patients aged between 3 and 28 years following fissure sealing with various materials. Results: The analysis revealed that the effectiveness of these materials as reflected by caries reduction varies between 21.8% and 100%.Conclusion: The results of studies carried out by Polish authors confirm significant, both prophylactic and caries-inhibiting action of fissure sealants.
