Evaluation of the microbial population from recirculating marine aquarium
Journal Title: Advances in Environmental Sciences - International Journal of the Bioflux Society - Year 2009, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Marine ornamental fishes are the most beautiful and fascinating creatures of the aquatic environment. Ornamental fish keeping has developed into a hobby and ranks next to photography. These fishes are facing more problems from microbial pathogens. To prevent disease outbreaks, it is important to understand how diseases are occurring. Therefore an attempt was made to study the bacterial population, pathogenic bacteria identification and nitrogen concentration in the aquarium waters. The observed ammonia values ranged from 0.031 to 0.144 Mg L-1, nitrite from 0.014 to 0.314 Mg L-1 and nitrate from 0.793 to 69.821 Mg L-1. The total bacterial counts of the water samples ranged from 5.4 x 102 to 2.1 x 107 CFU mL-1. The maximum bacterial count was found in the storage tank water sample (2.1 x 107 CFU mL-1) and the minimum bacterial count was found in the healthy tank sample (5.4 x 102 CFU mL-1). The most dominant colonies were Escherchia coli, Vibrio sp., Pseudomonas sp., Enterobacter sp. and Bacillus sp. Among these, diseased aquarium tank microbes used for the further identification. Of these the most predominant species (Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis) were identified based on the MIS gas chromatography.

Diet and endoparasites of Rana grandocula (Amphibia, Ranidae) and Limnonectes magnus (Amphibia, Dicroglossidae) in Mt. Sambilikan, Diwata Range, Agusan del Sur, Philippines
Anurans are recognized as one of the most threatened fauna on the planet, yet poor knowledge on the basic biology of these species is said to impede proper conservation efforts. The Philippines may have one of the most u...
Study on the evolution of the aquatic fauna in Lacul Ştiucii reservation during 2000-2011, Cluj County, Romania
Lacul Ştiucii (Pike Lake) lying on the northwest side of the Transylvanian Plain, is one of the most interesting, important and fascinating reservations in Romania, which is known (among other things) for breaking a few...
A checklist of malacofauna from Pondicherry mangroves
The Pondicherry mangroves is located (Long: 11o 46’03” to 11o 53’ 40” N; Lat: 79o 49’45” to 79o 48’ 00” E) on the Bay of Bengal (Coramendal Coast) seaboard. A survey has been made during January 2009 to know the pattern...
Environmental assessment of pollution with detergents in the Prut River Basin, Romania
This study focuses onto the assessment of the impacts and associated risks posed onto natural water bodies by detergent-containing wastewaters in the Prut river basin in North-Eastern Romania. The focus of this assessmen...
Preliminary indications of blood lead concentrations, among occupationally exposed and non exposed Palestinians
