Evaluation of the prevalence and characteristics of the genus Staphylococcus bacteria in patients with prosthetic restorations after renal organ transplantation

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2015, Vol 65, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction. Staphylococci are a heterogeneous group of microorganisms, consisting of major human pathogens. Their adhesion to artificial materials generates the colonisation of prosthetic restorations. A carriage of multidrug-resistance strains in denture plaque is particularly dangerous for patients receiving organ transplant. A routine microbiological examination during qualification for surgery does not include collection of swabs from dentures.Aim of the study. To analyse the prevalence of Staphylococcus bacteria in patients qualified for organ transplantation. Material and methods. In 23 patients qualified for kidney transplantation swabs from prosthetic restorations and posterior wall of pharynx were collected for microbiological examination. Strains of staphylococci were identified with conventional microbiologic methods and drug resistance profiles were determined. Results. Microbiologic analysis revealed different staphylococcal flora composition on the surface of pharynx and denture plaque. Drug resistance analysis showed significant differences between similar species isolated from dentures and tonsils. Among isolated species, S. Aureus and S.Epidermidis, responsible for a number of local and systemic diseases, were detected.Conclusions. Different composition of staphylococci species on the surface of pharynx wall and dentures suggests different microenvironments of close anatomical proximity locations. Bacteria present in the denture plaque may be a potential source of infection in organ transplant recipients, which may have an impact on their general health and even life.
