Journal Title: Scholars Academic Journal of Biosciences - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 12
Abstract
Menopause comes with great anticipation. The anticipation could even cause unnecessary fear in the women. The study was done to ascertain the haematological profile of menopausal women as changes usually show in the blood. This will help to prepare every woman who must pass through the stage if she lived long. One hundred and twenty women living in Umuahia, Nigeria were studied. Sixty of them were menopausal women aged 50-75 years; sixty were premenopausal women aged 20-35 years who at the time of sample collection were not menstruating. Blood samples were collected via venepuncture and analysed using an auto-analyzer (Prokan auto-analyzer).T-test was used for statistical analysis. There was a significant increase (P<0.05) in the red blood cell of premenopausal women when compared with that of menopausal women. Also the haematological indices of menopausal women are seen to be significantly increased when compared with that of premenopausal women. This study identified the risk of developing anaemia in menopausal women due to increase in their haematological indices. Keywords:Haematological profile, Pre-menopausal women and Menopausal women,Umuahia.
