Evaluation of Variations of Haematological Profile of Menstruating Women in Umuahia, Nigeria

Journal Title: Scholars Academic Journal of Biosciences - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 12

Abstract

Abstract:The study was done to determine the variations of haematological profile of menstruating women in Umuahia. One hundred and twenty women resident in Umuahia,Abia State, Nigeria were recruited for this studied. Sixty of them were non-menstruating women aged 20-35 years who at the time of sample collection were not menstruating; and another group of sixty were menstruating women aged 20-35 years.Blood samples were collected via venepuncture and analysed using an auto-analyzer (BC-Haematology auto-analyzer). T-test was used for statistical analysis. There was a significant increase (P<0.05) in the red blood cell, packed cell volume,WBC,PLT,MCV and MCH of non-menstruating women when compared with that of menstruating women and showed no significant difference (P>0.05) in the other variables and no significant difference (p>0.05) in the variables when compared according to age brackets. It also established that estrogen has an effect on haematopoietic stem cells which is indicated by the significant increase in the red cell count of premenopausal women. The menstruating women should eat well to avert the changes observed in this study.
