Abstract
Aim: In this study, it was aimed to determine the unmet needs of home health care patients in Samsun province. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study included 24 individuals who received home health care services in Samsun central provinces between April-May 2018. At the end of the home visit, an open-ended question regarding their unmet needs were asked to the caregivers. The given answers were recorded in their own words. Findings: Eight of the caregivers (33.3%) reported more than one unmet needs, while 11 reported a single problem. Five caregivers stated that their patients did not have any unmet care. The most frequently cited need was the prescription of medications for 12 caregivers (50%). The second frequently reported need (10 caregivers, 41.6%) was the transfer of the patients to health care facilities. Eight caregivers (33.3%) stated that their homes were on the top floors of an apartment and it was very difficult to find help in carrying stretchers and patients. Conclusion: Home health services are becoming increasingly widespread in our country. Determining the unmet needs of these patients is important in terms of increasing the quality of the service provided. The needs most often expressed by caregivers can be solved by easy measures.
