Evgen Oppokov`s scientific achievements to the establishment of hydro melioration in Ukraine

Abstract
The article is devoted to the activities of Oppokov Eugene Vladimirovich during the West expedition for dehumidification in Polesia and Chernihiv district as an engineer of hydrotechnics (land development engineer). Having drawn attention that swamps dehumidification already in the first years produced questionable results we understood the consequences of such processes. Namely − the complex of problems for local inhabitants and it caused concerns for the Organization of United Nations because of the surplus greenhouse gases emission in the atmosphere by dehumidificated peatbogs. The general aspects of the scientist’s works in comparison with the other scientific literature in that sphere of those times have been analyzed. We have proved that in the end of XIX century − beginning of XX century there were other types of soil dehumidification. But because of the E.V. Oppokov’s leading positions in the Academy of sciences and its departments that short-sighted method of soil quality improvement spread.
