Examination of Battal-Nâme in Terms of Value Education

Abstract
Battal-Name is a saga or an epic folk story about the wars for religion fought by a hero named Battal Gazi who became famous in Umayyad – Byzantium Wars in VIII. century (Demir & Erdem, 2006, p.25). In this study, Battal-Name was analyzed in terms of “Values Education”. There are universal values accepted as the common values of the humanity. Besides that we also have our own national values. It is considered that our national values involve the universal values, too. From this point of view, as we transfer the values, it is essential that we make use of our national treasures and heroes. The starting point of this study is the question of “Could one of these heroes be Battal Gazi?” Document Review Model, qualitative research method, was used in this study. In the result of the study, it is found that there are both appropriate and inappropriate parts for values education and transfer in Battal-Name. Thus, it is considered that Battal-Name is suitable for being evaluated and used in Values Education providing that inconvenient parts are excluded.
