Exercise-induced Bronchospasm -1 (Epidemiology, Pathophysiology and Diagnosis)
Journal Title: Spor Hekimliği Dergisi - Year 2016, Vol 51, Issue 2
Abstract
Exercise-induced bronchospasm is chronic inflamatory disease of airways and is seen 12% of general population. The rate is higher in sportsmen, especially in durability athletes, and the incidence is increasing over the years. After vigorous exercise, acute and temporary airway obstruction occurs, particularly in the presence of triggers, such as dry-cold air or airborne irritants. EIB is seen in 90% of asthmatic patients. Uncontrolled asthma and bronchial hiperreactivity cause an increase in frequency and severity of EIB. Symptoms start in 5 to 12 minutes following the exercise and resolve spontaneously within 40 to 60 minutes. It responds well to bronchodilator agents. Bronchial challenge tests are valuable in diagnosis.
