Experience with application of nasal interferon in the treatment and prevention of acute respiratory infections

Journal Title: Актуальна інфектологія - Year 2019, Vol 7, Issue 4

Abstract

According to the World Health Organization data, every third inhabitant of the planet annually seeks medical care for acute respiratory infection. The results of many studies indicate that the correction of immune processes in the site of inflammation is more effective than the impact on the immune cells of blood stream (in systemic use of medications). Therefore, a logical approach to the treatment of respiratory viral infections affecting the respiratory epithelium is the use of intranasal interferon drugs that provide antiviral, immunomodulatory and antibacterial action in the site of infection. In the available literature, there are a sufficient number of clinical studies dealing with the efficacy of nasal and aerosol forms of interferon alpha in acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI). They demonstrated that recombinant interferon alpha is an effective drug for the treatment and prevention of ARVI. Its use reduces the period of clinical recovery of patients, the severity of clinical symptoms of the disease, makes it possible to avoid manifestation of disease. Also, interferon preparations can be used as agents for the prevention of influenza and ARVI.
