Experimental asthma in rats.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2008, Vol 60, Issue 6
Abstract
Animal models of asthma have been used for over 100 years. The accuracy of extrapolations from animal models to human asthmatics is highly dependent on the species of animal selected. The rat, in comparison with other animals, demonstrates many features of airway allergy and allergic asthma that are similar to the human conditions. The following features of human asthma can be effectively investigated in a rat model of the disease: cellular infiltration of the lung, antigen-specific IgE production, and a predominant Th2 response. The majority of available models of asthma are restricted to the acute inflammatory response following a short period of allergen exposure. The frequently used model of ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization and challenge replicates the inflammatory process in the airways.

Repeated co-treatment with fluoxetine and amantadine induces brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene expression in rats.
In the present study, we investigated the influence of repeated treatment with fluoxetine (FLU, 5 or 10 mg/kg) and amantadine (AMA, 10 mg/kg), given separately or jointly (twice daily for 14 day), at the mRNA level (the...
Comparative study of multiple dosage of quercetin against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity and oxidative stress in rat kidneys.
Quercetin, a typical bioflavonoid ubiquitously present in fruits and vegetables, is considered to be helpful for human health. Cisplatin (cDDP) is one of the most active cytotoxic agents in the treatment of a wide range...
Gestational manganese intoxication and anxiolytic-like effects of diazepam and the 5-HT1A receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT in male Wistar rats.
In the present study, the effects of prenatal manganese (Mn) intoxication on the anxiolytic-like effects of diazepam and the 5-HT(1A) receptor agonist R-(+)-8-hydroxy-dipropylaminotetralin (8-OH-DPAT) were examined.Wista...
Immunosuppressant cytoprotection correlates with HMGB1 suppression in primary astrocyte cultures exposed to combined oxygen-glucose deprivation.
The protective potential of immunosuppressants has been reported in many experimental models of ischemia both in vivo and in vitro, suggesting a novel therapeutic application of these drugs. Because high-mobility group b...
Antidepressant-like effect of PRE-084, a selective sigma1 receptor agonist, in Albino Swiss and C57BL/6J mice.
PRE-084, a selective sigma receptor agonist, exhibited an antidepressant-like effect in the forced swim test (FST) in Albino Swiss and C57BL/6J mice. This effect was counteracted by BD 1047 (5 and 10 mg/kg) but not by SM...
