Experimental Investigation on Effect of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) on Biofuel-Diesel Fuelled HCCI Engine using External Fuel Vaporizer

Journal Title: GRD Journal for Engineering - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 6

Abstract

Homogeneous charge compression ignition is new combustion concept, which is used to reduce the emissions and improve the engine performance parameters. HCCI combustion technology reduces the NOx emissions significantly in the diesel engine. Homogeneous mixture inside the combustion chamber helps to reduce exhaust gas temperature and NOx emissions. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is also one of the well-known technique used in diesel engine to reduce the NOx emissions. In EGR some amount of exhaust gas in recirculated in the engine cylinder after passing through the EGR cooler. This experiment’s objective is to analyze the working of a single cylinder diesel engine under HCCI combustion mode with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) using bio fuels, widely available from the agricultural wastes. The engine is run at its conventional mode and at HCCI mode with both Diesel-Bio fuel HCCI. The HCCI mode of engine operation involves different percentage of HCCI as 10%, 30%, 50%, 70% and observations carried out. Partially cooled exhaust gas is introduced with different rate as 10%, 15% and 20%. Combination of these two technologies reduces the emissions and improve the engine performance parameters significantly. Finally study is carried out on effect of EGR on HCCI engine using bio fuel. The optimum emissions are obtained at 20% EGR and 30% HCCI. The efficiency tends to be higher for HCCI engine compared to conventional diesel engine.
