Experimental Studies оf Drying Processes of Medicinal Herbs

Abstract

In recent years, there has been a trend of increasing consumer demand for natural health remedies. Most medicinal herbs are used in medicine and other industries in the dried form. Due to this, there is a problem of the drying and storage of medicinal herbs. The article is belongs to the task of drying and storage of medicinal herbs. The relevance of drying is proved - as the most simple and economical method of preserving medicinal raw materials ensuring the conservation of biologically active substances. It also increases the shelf life of the product and reduces the storage space. The drying process should be carried out no later than one-two hours after the raw material is harvested, which makes it possible to preserve its appearance and active substances as much as possible, and does not go beyond the recommended temperature regime. The analysis of recent studies and publications devoted to the consideration of theoretical and practical aspects of the development of medicinal herb drying has been made and highlighted in the works of both domestic and foreign scientists. The main requirements for drying the herbs are given. Methods of drying medicinal herbal materials are considered. The goals and the need for experiments to study the effect of changes in air temperature and its velocity on the drying process are formulated. The main conditions for obtaining high-quality raw materials at the output for a short period of time with minimal energy consumption are determined. The design of a chamber convective dryer in which experiments were carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Heat Gas Supply, Ventilation and Heating of the Poltava National Technical Yuri Kondratiuk University is presented. The results of its verification for aerodynamic and thermal performance are presented. Carrying out experiments on drying nettles, their analysis and comparison. The most appropriate option for drying nettles was selected. The main conclusions are drawn from the results of field laboratory experiments. The necessity and prospects of further research on the drying of medicinal plants are proved.
