Exploring a precariousness job Index for Colombia

Journal Title: Revista CEA - Year 2023, Vol 9, Issue 21

Abstract

Purpose: This study proposes an index to measure the precariousness of job in Colombia. Design/methodology: A quantitative methodology was used because the purpose was to measure precariousness taken as a variable. A descriptive analysis was carried out for each one of the eight dimensions of this type of precariousness. These dimensions, as well as indicators for each one of them, were analyzed and weighted. For this purpose, first, expert validation was carried out. Subsequently, a survey was conducted with 365 participants who work in 16 different economic sectors. Findings: This study showed that there is greater precariousness in positions where the required education level is lower; that people with an open-ended contract do not receive an equitable salary compared to their workload; and that, despite the preconceived idea, at many large and medium-sized companies there are no employee recognition programs for good performance. Conclusions: precariousness of jobs goes beyond material aspects such as salary. It is also present at medium and large companies, and hits unskilled jobs the hardest. Originality: The instrument constructed and validated for this study contains eight dimensions of precariousness of job: financial compensation, work-life balance, job uncertainty, working conditions, occupational health, labor rights, vulnerability, and organizational policies. The study applies these dimensions to the Colombian case.
