FACTOR OF PERFECTIONISM SELF-PRESENTATION IN THE STRUCTURE OF PERSONALITY PERFECTIONISM
Journal Title: Наука і освіта - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 11
Abstract
In psychology, perfectionism is considered as a drive for perfection, which implies inflated requirements to every action, combined with a tendency to exaggerated critical evaluations of one’s own behavior, the tendency to follow the inflated standards of performance and to make severe demands to one’s own personality. In modern scientific literature perfectionism is usually regarded as a complex psychological construct, which has a multidimensional structure. Despite the large number of studies in psychological science there is no consistency in the structural components of this psychological phenomenon. The article is aimed at describing the role of the factor of perfectionism self-presentation in the structure of personality perfectionism. The leading criterion for creating the concept of diversification of perfectionism is multidimensionality of its psychological structure. Based on this, we consider perfectionism as a psychological property, which has a relative functional and structural independence in the personality structure and is expressed in a subject’s desire to be perfect in anything. An important theoretical thesis of our conceptual approach to perfectionism is that aiming for high standards in itself is not pathological: an individual might enjoy hard work, self-development, and the improvement of the results, with it he/she takes for himself/herself the fact of the limits of personal selfimprovement. With the help of the techniques “Perfectionistic self-presentation scale” by P. Hewitt the following indicators have been examined: “perfection manifestation”, “behavioural non-manifestation of imperfection”, “verbal nonmanifestation of imperfection” and “basic indicator of perfectionistic self-presentation”. Thus, the obtained data on the statistical regularities between different forms of manifestation of perfectionism provide opportunities to state the following. Two forms of perfectionism, normal (positive) and pathological (negative), are related to other forms of perfectionism, which are self-direction and self-presentation. The correlation between these components allows further searching for psychological patterns in the manifestations of perfectionism, namely the study of the nature of relations of perfectionism with cognitive, personal and behavioral factors. As a result of the correlation matrix factorization of the data a six-factor model of personality perfectionism has been created. In its structure the factor “Self-presentation of perfectionism” takes special place. Thus, it has been proved that there are statistical regularities in the grouping of traits, which belong to perfectionism and form perfectionistic self-presentation.
