Journal Title: Revista Eugenio Espejo - Year 2024, Vol 18, Issue 2

Abstract

Child malnutrition constitutes a significant challenge in the field of public health. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of social and cultural factors on the nutritional status of Ecuadorian children under two years of age. A prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional, and observational study was developed. The study included 169 children under two years of age residing in the Picoazá Parish. Simple random sampling was used to select the sample. The instrument applied was a structured survey directed at the mothers of the children under study, validated in the United States by the Pan American Health Organization obtained by the Operational Research Manual on Integrated Care of Prevalent Childhood Illnesses. The results showed that 83.9% of the mothers had an education level of 7 to 12 years of studies, 76.3 % were literate and 88.6% did not have financial support from the parent to feed the child. On the other hand, 88.7% of infants have an incomplete vaccination schedule, 95.5 % of mothers did not attend prenatal check-ups, 98.4 % of children exposed to stimuli for food intake, and 96.8 % who did not receive exclusive breastfeeding, represented socio-cultural variables that influenced the prevalence of chronic and acute malnutrition in children under two years of age. A correlation could be established between social and cultural factors and the nutritional status of the infants.
