Fake Books as an Uninvestigated Phenomenon of the Ukrainian Emigration’s Publishing Activity: Genesis, Typology, Ways of Transporting to the Ussr, Scale, and Sources of Funding

Abstract
The article is based on the archival materials of the Ukrainian emigration, analyzed by the author during his scientific internship in Great Britain. The etymology of the “fake book” concept is considered in etymological dictionaries in general, and as interpreted by the KGB workers in particular (“intricately made nationalist documents”). Also, the article provides a retrospective history of the Ukrainian fake books – from the 1878 Geneva issue of the uncensored “Kobzar” by T. Shevchenko to the 1960s–80s array of literature, published in London by means of the Ukrainian Publishing Union and shipped to the USSR. The research gives the first typology of these publications. All of them are analyzed in the article by such subject directions: works of the leaders of the national liberation movement headed by Stepan Bandera, Yaroslav Stetsko, Yevhen Konovalets; documents and materials of the administration of the OUN Great Congress; documentary materials, memoirs about everyday life in UPA; illegally obtained self-published materials about the 1960s movement and court trials of its participants; pamphlets depicting Soviet reality; scientific articles of the scholars from the Ukrainian diaspora dealing with the pages of the Ukrainian history fabricated by Russia (in the original language); works of the Ukrainian Soviet writers of the so-called “concealed” literature, which was banned by the Soviet power or recognized by it as “ideologically immature”; some issues of the “Nash Shliakh” journal in the pocketbook format. A separate coverage is given to the ways of transporting disruptive anti-Soviet literature to the Ukrainian territory, occupied by Bolsheviks. The study of this question allowed the author to outline the steady delivery network of this literature outside the iron gate of the USSR through such key channels: a) legal mailing (parcels, letters); b) private tourist channels (a preliminary formed circle of individuals – foreigners and Soviet citizens – engaged in shipping literature on certain terms, often for a material reward).
