Falls – epidemiology, risk factors and prevention strategy

Abstract

Falls and their consequences constitut e the most importa nt challenge of geriatric health care. Among fall -related complica tions the most freque nt are injuries, with the especially devastating hip fr acture. Number of falls incre ases with age and with mu ltiple risk factors. Prevention of falls involves ident ifi cation of risk factors and their circumstanc es, thorough examination of cardiova scular and neurological system, clinic al tests of gait and balan ce and early rehabilitati on. This articl e provides an overview of the epidemio logy of falls and common causes of risk factors. Recomm endations of American Geriatric Society about approach to older people fall history have been shown.
