Fantom ciała jako cielesna samoświadomość

Artykuł ten podejmuje problematykę, która w literaturze przewija się przynajmniej od sławnej pracy Paula Schildera The Image and apperance of human body. Mowa tu o przekonaniu, że: […] perhaps the body itself is a phantom (Schilder 1964). Nie jest to odosobniona myśl; można by przywołać tu opinię Ramachandrana: […] your own body is a phantom, one your brain has temporaily construed… (Ramachandran I Blakeslee 1998), czy Halligana: […] it is important to consider that the experience of our body is largely the product of a continuously updated „phantom” generated by the brain (Halligan 2002). Wszystkie przytoczone wypowiedzi zdają się mówić to samo: doświadczenie własnego ciała u osób zdrowych jest w szczególny sposób powiązane z doświadczeniem kończyn fantomowych. Melzack pisze: the phantom represents our normal experience of the body (Melzack 1989). Na czym więc polega to połączenie? Wydaje się, że można by zaryzykować taką tezę: postrzeganie własnego zdrowego ciała zawiera element konstrukcyjny, polegający na ciągłym generowaniu i aktualizowaniu fantomu tego ciała. Innymi słowy: ośrodkowy układ nerwowy (OUN) nieustannie konstruuje fenomenalno-funkcjonalny model własnego ciała, który – z powodu czasowych parametrów aktualizacji tegoż modelu – nie ulega od razu zmianie, pomimo utraty kończyny. Niniejszy tekst poświęcony jest tej właśnie tezie, a także koncepcji mówiącej, że wspomniany model – a dokładniej: jego fenomenalny aspekt – jest podstawową formą samoświadomości cielesnej.
