Features related to transmigration of mandibular canines

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2017, Vol 13, Issue 1

Abstract

Aim. To evaluate the clinical and radiographic findings in patients with a mandibular canine transmigration. Additionally, the types of the treatment provided to patients are described. Material and methods. 73 patients (48 females and 25 males) with mandibular canine transmigration were included. The mean age of patients was 13,4 years with the range from 8 to 49 years. Panoramic radiographs were evaluated to assess the pattern of transmigration, the presence of a retained primary mandibular canine and the impaction of a contralateral canine. Additionally, class of occlusion, space relation and midline shift were recorded. Results. Most of patients presented patterns 1 or 2 and mild transmigration of mandibular canine. Seventy-six per cent of patients had primary canine retained on the affected side and 5 patients had impacted contralateral permanent canine. Three quarters of patients had Class 1 occlusion on molars on both sides, 52% had no crowding and 49% presented midline shift to the affected side while 34% had no shift in the mandibular arch. Conclusions. Transmigration of a mandibular canine is not associated with the presence of any particular findings related to teeth, space conditions or Angle class. Almost 90% of patients were treated and in most cases surgical removal of the transmigrated canine was performed.
