FIELD CONTROL EFFICACY OF S-METHOPRENE ON GERMAN COCKROACHES, BLATTELLA GERMANICA IN SHANGHAI CITY
Journal Title: Acta Parasitologica et Medica Entomologica Sinica - Year 2024, Vol 31, Issue 2
Abstract
[Objective] A field trial was conducted to explore the efficacy of S-methoprene for controlling German cockroaches. [Methods] Two farmer's markets in Shanghai City were randomly selected as locations for conducting our research. The experimental market was administered S-methoprene adhesive tablets while the control group was subjected to traditional control methods. To evaluate the efficacy of each strategy against German cockroaches, German cockroach population densities and reproduction rates between the two markets were compared. [Results] After 30 days of treatment, the density of German cockroaches in the experimental group declined significantly (67.11% reduction rate overall, 79.79% in nymphs). In the control group, the density of German cockroaches remained relatively stable for the first 60 d, then started to increase from day 90th. Among the German cockroaches brought back from the treatment site, nymphs deformed and died earlier. Three of the 10 egg cases collected from the control treatment sites could not hatch, while the remaining seven eggs eventually produced a total of 122 nymphs. Among these, 40 nymphs successfully molted into adults; however, three of them deformed with bad wings. [Conclusion] Experimental findings indicate that S-methoprene can effectively reduce the population density and fecundities of German cockroaches through its teratogenic and sterilizing effects.
