Fine needle aspiration cytology as a diagnostic tool for assessment of cervicallymphadenopathy in a hospital-based study in garhwal region

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 3

Abstract

Aim: The study is aimed for analysis of various cytomorphological patterns of lymphadenopathy and the diagnostic utility of FNAC in our setup.Materials and Methods: The retrospective study included 823 cases of cervical lymphadenopathy, and except the 22 cases of non diagnostic cases, 801 cases were given a diagnosis, and their cytomorphological patternswas studied. Results and Conclusion: In this study, data and slides of 823 patients with cervical lymphadenopathy were studied and reviewed. 22 cases of lymph node aspirates were found to be inadequate for any comments and hence non diagnostic. Cytomorphological patterns and clinical findings of 801 cases were studied. The male to female patients were in ratio of 1.1: 1.The age of presentation ranged from 1 year to 81 years. Of all the cases studied, granulomatous lymphadenitis was found to be the most common cause with 45.57%, followed by non specific reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. Metastasis was found to be more commonerthan lymphomas in the studied lymph nodes. Squamous cell carcinoma was encountered as the most common type of metastasis in cervical lymph nodes. FNAC is the best first line investigation for diagnosis of cervical lymphadenopathy and is a safe, simple, reliable and minimally invasive procedure.
