Journal Title: Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 51

Abstract

BACKGROUND The current study is a descriptive study done at a tertiary care hospital to evaluate the significance of the diagnostic technique of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in cervical lymphadenopathy and to study the cytomorphological patterns of various conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study includes 250 cases undergoing FNAC for cervical lymphadenopathy over a period of 18 months and diagnosing various conditions based on cytological features of the aspirates. Also, correlation is done of various diagnoses with age and gender of cases. RESULTS Study results show that the most commonly affected age group to be 31 to 40 years with male predominance. Most common cytological diagnosis was reactive lymphadenitis with most common malignant cause of cervical lymphadenopathy being metastatic squamous cell carcinoma. Many cases of granulomatous lymphadenitis were also seen where Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining was done. CONCLUSION FNAC is a safe and easy diagnostic method and offers many advantages to clinician and pathologist in cervical lymphadenopathy.
