Abstract

Food insecurity is defined either limited or uncertain adequate food at all times for an active and healthy lifestyle. The recent studies indicate that the widespread food insecurity exists in various regions of Iran. The present study is aimed to examine the status of food insecurity and socioeconomic factors affecting the female students in Tehran. This study has been achieved on 330 girl students (mean age of 15.99 ± 0.99 year-old) in the manner of cross-sectional in Tehran in 1392. The samples are selected in the cluster random manner. The general socioeconomic characteristics and food security status were assessed using the general and the USDA Household Food Security Status questionnaires. The statistical analysis is performed by SPSS software. The percentage of food insecurity was 46.7%. Among the variables of ethnicity, body mass index, number of employed persons per families, household economic level, food supplement and oral contraceptive consumption, and physical activity were significantly related to food insecurity (P<0.5). So, there is a relationship between the household food insecurity and the socioeconomic level of the high school girls, food security status improves by higher socioeconomic level of the household. In order to deeply understand this relationship, broader case control and prospective studies are necessary.
