FOUR GREAT PROPHETS IN 17TH CENTURY MINSTREL LITERATURE

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 52

Abstract

Anatolian area folk literature has developed into three main branches which are minstrel literature, anonymous literature and sufi (Islamic monastery) literature. This literature raised its strongest representatives in the 17th century. The poems of nearly thirty representatives of this century are currently available. There are also names whose poems are not available to us although they are mentioned in Sairnames. The four prophets (Muhammad, Jesus, Moses, David) who are known to have received revelation from God are referred to in some poems of 17th century minstrels for various reasons. Free poems on Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, were also written in this period. Many phenomena, cases and subjects ranging from individual characteristics to the miracles of the prophets were mentioned by the minstrels of the period. In this study, emphasis will be laid on the reasons why four prophets were referred to in the minstrel literature of the period and the extent to which the minstrels knew the four prophets will be revealed.
