Frequency of childhood abuse in university students

Abstract

Objectives: Child abuse or bad behaviors against children is a social, medical problem and is old as the history of humanity. The analysis of the frequency of childhood abuse in university students and the comparison of the factors related with abuse were aimed in this study. Materials and methods: A questionnaire of social and demographic features and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire which is valid and reliable in Turkey were used in this study. Results: The questionnaires were performed to 150 students and 60 % of them were female. The mean age was 19.04±1.28 (17-26 years). The emotional (p=0.025), physical (p=0.004) and sexual (p=0.001) abuse of male students were significantly higher than female students. The emotional (p=0.009) and total (p=0.026) abuse of students who had families with lower income levels were significantly high. Also the frequency of emotional abuse in students with divorced parents was significantly increased (p=0.012). Conclusions: Since child abuse and neglect may be associated with the stresses of family life, the economic and social stresses of family should be determined and solution advices to these should be developed. A multidisciplinary management is required to detect, treat and rehabilitate the childhood abuse. Key words: Childhood, university student, sexual abuse
