Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2015, Vol 11, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction. Speech disorders are mentioned among factorsresponsible for the formation of malocclusion. Up to dateresearch studies do not allow for an unequivocal definitionof a relationship between specific malocclusion types andarticulation disorders. Aim. The aim of this study was todetermine a correlation between malocclusions and speechdefects among preschool children. Material and methods. The examination included 204 children aged from 2.5 to 6years attending 3 preschools in Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia. The children were divided into 3 age groups: group I included65 children aged from 2.5 to 3.5 years (milk dentition), groupII – 65 children aged 3.5 to 4.5 years (late milk dentition),and group III - 74 children aged 4.5 to 6 years (early mixeddentition). The study involved obtaining the children’smedical history records from their parents/legal guardiansand an orthodontic examination in compliance with theguidelines of the World Health Organization. Results.Malocclusion was observed in 93 (45.6%) children, whilespeech disorders were reported by the parents/legalguardians of 95 children (46.6%). Distocclusion (Class IImalocclusion) was the most common type of malocclusion. In group II, mesiocclusion was more frequently observedas compared to the other two groups. Class III and openbite cases appear to be those being most commonlyassociated with co-existent comorbid articulation disorders.(Orzelska-Blomberg M, Kuropatnicka M, Szkarłat B,Wojtaszek-Słomińska A, Grzybiak M.
