From Transnational Unity to Ancestry: Turkish Spoken Islamic Hip-Hop

Journal Title: Moment Dergi - Year 2016, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

Ongoing since the 1970’s, the hip-hop movement and subculture divides into various subgenres. Islamic hip-hop, which was born among the Muslim minority US residents, has become widespread among the European Muslim diaspora especially after the 1990’s, evolving into a multi-lingual, accented musical genre. The genre spread to Turkey via European Turkish-speaking minorities and also emerged a mostly amateur audience of producers. Certainly, the Islamic hip-hop repertoire is quite wide and impossible to be handled entirely in a single article. This article is intended to be an introduction to Turkish Islamic hip-hop, which is a topic not much studied upon. The article starts with an introduction to Islamic punk, an eclectic genre that inspired this study, however not much represented in Turkey, and continues with the Islamic approaches to music. Afterwards, a historical outline is drawn to base the Islamic influences on popular music and its reflections in Turkey. Finally, Turkish spoken Islamic hip-hop is discussed through sample song lyrics chosen according to their content meaning.
