Functional brain mapping using the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) – the role of diagnostic imaging in the planning of neurosurgical procedures

Journal Title: Inżynier i Fizyk Medyczny - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

Neurosurgical operations carry a high risk of surgery-induced postoperative neurological deficits. That is why functional MRI (fMRI) of the brain is performed to show the localization of functionally relevant brain structures adjacent to a brain tumor. This knowledge is very important for planning neurosurgical operations. The neurosurgeon knowing such a map can spare these identified regions during an operation.
