Functional Exoticness in the Process of Language Acquisition
Journal Title: Söylem Filoloji Dergisi - Year 2018, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
In this study, within framework of contrastive linguistics, the difficulties encountered in the acquisition of exotic items between languages are examined. As subject of the research, all functional areas of the French subjective mode were selected. Having different levels of language learning, the students may have difficulties in the usage of this mode because of exoticness of functional areas in two languages. Indeed, is the success of students from the first to fourth grade in using the functional areas of this mode changing in a positive way? We assert that Turkish students have difficulty in using these functional areas due to functional exoticness of this mode in two languages, and that this difficulty can not be overcome even if language levels of the students change. To ensure this hypothesis, we implemented a questionnaire of knowledge consist of 20 questions about usage of subjective mode on a sample of 78 students. According to obtained data, there was not a significant difference between four groups. It was determined that the students with different language levels had difficulty in using all functional areas of this mode. Although the levels of learning of students changed, it was observed that this difficulty remained the same.
