GENDER EQUALITY POLICY – SELECTED REGULATIONS OF INTERNATIONAL AND EUROPEAN LAW

Abstract

In democratic countries the awareness of the need to guarantee equal rights and responsibilities for representatives of both sexes is deep-rooted. ƒis principle - as long as it is not only an empty declaration - can have a practical dimension: real projects for the sake of equality achieving speci#c goals. E„ective protection of human rights requires certain guarantees and protection from discrimination. Equality of women and men de jure and de facto is one of the priorities of the United Nations, Council of Europe and the European Union. ƒe article attempts to characterise selected law regulations regarding gender equality and non-discrimination. ƒe author focuses on international and European law legal acts, since they are the foundations of modern equality policies. ƒe paper brie3y describes also the gender mainstereaming strategy, which as a novel approach became a basis for further equality regulations in, among others, the whole European Union.<br/><br/>
