General and dental anxiety – their correlation and prevalence based on literature

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2013, Vol 66, Issue 2

Abstract

The percentage of individuals in an adult population reporting anxiety and discomfort in relation to dental treatment has remained almost at the same level for the past decades in developed countries. Fear of dentists ranked fifth among common fears after fear of snakes, heights, storms and flying and fourth among severe fears. There are a number of elements leading to dental anxiety, one of them being general anxiety. The aim of the study is to assess the prevalence and correlation between general and dental anxiety on the basis of literature reports.
