Genetic background of osteochondrosis in the horse – a review
Journal Title: Animal Science Papers and Reports - Year 2012, Vol 30, Issue 3
Abstract
Osteochondrosis is considered to be one of the most important problems in European sport horse breeding, as the frequency of OC(D) reaches 25% or more of investigated populations. The present article provides an overview of the genetic background of OC(D) evaluated in different countries. Heritability is low (0.1-0.3) and contemporary selection methods seem not to be sufficiently effective. New approaches regarding molecular methods have been developed and are a promising tool. These include techniques such as whole genome scan, candidate gene analysis and SNP microarrays. Potential candidate genes were found on chromosomes 2, 4, 16, 18, 28 and 30. The most recent results on microarray SNP analysis using 50000 SNP chip detected new QTL regions in the horse genome.

Direct detection of Mycobacterium avium subsp. Paratuberculosis in bovine milk by multiplex Real-time PCR
The study aimed at direct detection of Mycobacterium avium subsp. Paratuberculosis (MAP) in milk by evaluating a multiplex real-time PCR assay targeting IS900 and ISMAV2 sequences including the amplification of PUC19-pla...
Effect of addition of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and herb preparation to feed on selected physiological indicators, growth rate and pelt quality of growing arctic foxes
Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and oil-and-water preparations (extracts) of plants are used in feeding farm animals, improving their health and productivity. It was attempted to use a plantorigin preparation (extract)...
Physiological response to the first saddling and first mounting of horses: comparison of two sympathetic training methods
There is not much research done on the influence of sympathetic training on the emotional reaction of horses. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the emotional response and the stress level in horses to two symp...
Fodder enrichment and sustaining animal well-being as methods of improving quality of animal-derived food products, in the aspect of consumer perception and acceptance
Improvement of animal-derived food products can be implemented by modification of fatty acids profile, by reducing fat, calories, cholesterol or sodium level or by incorporating bioactive compounds. However, consumer beh...
Chemical composition, fatty acid profile, including health indices of intramuscular fat, and technological suitability of the meat of young bulls of three breeds included in a genetic resources conservation programme fattened within a low-input system
Proximate composition and the proportions of 38 fatty acids (FA) were determined in the meat (m. longisimus lumborum and m. semitendinosus) of young bulls of 3 native Polish breeds (Polish Red – PR, White-Backed – WB and...
