Genetic diversity analysis of snail species (Mollusca: Gastropoda) using molecular marker technology
Journal Title: Journal of Biodiversity and Environmental Sciences (JBES) - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 1
Abstract
Members of the Phylum Mollusca can be used as model animals to study the reproductive barriers, for evolution and gamete recognition proteins for which they must be correctly identified and classified. Phenotypic plasticity results in changes in shell morphology, leading to the development of synonyms and homonyms of species, which necessitates molecular characterization. Fifteen species of molluscs collected from different agro-ecosystems of Faisalabad were characterized using polymorphic RAPD dacamers. Total of 114 fragments amplified and only 90 were found polymorphic showing 78.94% polymorphism. The range of amplified RAPD fragments was from 7 to 9 with an average of 7.6 per primer. The overall mean band frequency ranged between 0.27 – 0.68 with an average value of 0.41. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that the variance component among and within populations was 11% and 89% respectively, which is significantly different at probability less than 0.001. Close association was observed among the species of genus Ariophanta and Oxychilus draparnaudi, Monacha catiana and these species were found to be closely clustered in one group while the species Zooctecus insularis is distantly related with rest of the species in this group showing it to be genetically distant from the same group. The cluster analysis shows that Juvenile Zooctecus insularis lies separately in cladogram, as it might be a new species.

Diversity and distribution patterns of aquatic insects in fish farm ponds in South Côte d’Ivoire
A study was conducted in five fish farm ponds in Southern Ivory Coast from December 2007 to November 2008. Overall, 79 taxa belonging to 35 families and 8 orders of aquatic insects were identified. Hemiptera and Coleop...
Changes in Acid and Alkaline Phosphatase Enzyme Activity in Rhizosphere Ash Fraxinus rotundifolia and its correlation with soil and plant P
We investigated in field experiments seasonal dynamics of acid and alkaline phosphatase activity. Alkaline and acid phosphatase activity showed a seasonal pattern. Alkaline phosphatase activity was significantly higher...
Integration of biochar and chemical fertilizer to enhance quality of soil and wheat crop (Triticum aestivum L.)
A wide variety of soil amendments like manures, compost, humic acid and bio-sorbents have been used to make nutrients available to crops as well as to protect them from toxic elements. Among soil amendments, biochar has...
Tree Species Composition, Richness and Diversity of the Mount Matutum Protected Landscape (MMPL), Philippines
Forest trees assemblage and distribution were assessed through Plot Method across disturbed and undisturbed habitat gradients (500-1712 masl) representing lowland, montane and mossy forests of Mount Matutum Protected Lan...
Microhabitats of pholcid spiders (araneae: pholcidae) in Marilog District and Mount Hamiguitan, Davao, Philippines
Most spider groups use plants and ground as their microhabitats. In this study, microhabitats of pholcid spiders were investigated in Marilog and Mount Hamiguitan Wildlife Sanctuary in Davao, Philippines to determine the...
