Genetic Variability and Heritability Studies in Cowpea (vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp)

Abstract

Fifteen cowpea germplasm lines were evaluated for grain yield and its components in a field experiment designed in randomized block design with two replications conducted during rabi season, 2018 in ORARS, Kayamkulam, Kerala. Analysis of variance revealed a significant difference among varieties for all the characters under study. A high genotypic coefficient of variation, heritability in broad sense and genetic advance were estimated for some of the characters viz., seed yield per plant, seed index, number of pods per plant and pod length and number of primary branches, specify the scope for improvement of these characters through artificial selection. The genotype Kashi Kanchan recorded the maximum mean value for pod length, the number of seeds per pod, and seed index. The estimates of phenotypic coefficient of variation for all yield parameters were higher than that of the genotypic coefficient of variation. A high heritability value coupled with high genetic advance as per cent has been noticed in the parameters like plant height, seed yield per plant, number of pods per plant, pod length and hundred seed weight, indicate the presence of a weak or slight environmental influence and prevalence of additive gene action in gene expression. The information on genetic variability among the existing cowpea genotypes will increase the efficiency of the cowpea improvement in terms of quality and quality
