Gestational Age Related Study on Morphology and Morphometry of Human Foetal Suprarenal Gland
Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 1
Abstract
Introduction: Suprarenal gland shows variation in morphology and morphometry during prenatal stage of development. Kidney suprarenal ratio presents characteristic change from foetal to postnatal life. Objectives: Objective of present study is to correlate morphology and morphometry of foetal suprarenal gland with respect to age, sex, side and weight. Materials and Methods: Suprarenal glands from 61 aborted fetuses of both sexes and 13-40 weeks gestational age were observed for morphological parameters like color, surface and shape and morphometric parameters of weight, length, width, antero-posterior thickness and thickness of cortex and medulla along with weight of kidneys. The external body parameters of fetal weight, biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, Crown-rump length and Crown-heel length were recorded and compared with suprarenal parameters. Statistical analysis was done by one way analysis of variance test and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. Results: Both glands were pyramidal up to 22 weeks and there after right gland continued to be pyramidal and left gland attained semi-lunar shape. The weight of left adrenal is more than that of right. Gestational age-wise significance of external fetal parameters and various external and internal parameters of suprarenal gland were observed. Conclusion: In the present study no gender-wise significance of external foetal and supra renal morphometric parameters but gestational age-wise significance of external fetal and supra renal and renal parameters. This forms a data base for suprarenal morphometry in the South-Indian population of prenatal age group.
