GLOBALIZATION AND ENERGY: AN ANTHROPOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
Journal Title: Journal of Globalization Studies - Year 2014, Vol 5, Issue 2
Abstract
Globalization is a multi-dimensional topic that is being analyzed across the sciences and humanities. A common theme among these analyses is the emer-gence of a new world order. This is not inevitable. Discussions center on the resolution of social and cultural problems as this presumptive new world or-der evolves. One topic missing from these discussions is the role of energy in globalization. This paper argues that the world is facing an energy crisis that could destroy the current thrust toward globalization. We investigate this premise by analyzing the effects of three factors related to the impact of energy on globalization: energy boundaries, peak energy, and a near exponential growth in the worlds' population. Fossil fuels are being depleted. Alternatives are not yet, nor for the foreseeable future, sufficiently available to make a difference. Surviving in a world with less energy than we currently have is a challenge for our future.
