GLYCEMIC ABNORMALITIES IN MULTI-TRANSFUSED THALASSEMIA PATIENTS

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Transfusion-dependent thalassemia is one of the most common genetic disorders in young people in every community in the world. A suitable treatment for this condition includes regular blood transfusion and chelation therapy. Due to inefficient erythropoiesis and repeated blood transfusions, these patients have to deal with iron accumulation and associated complications. Glycemic abnormalities are the most important endocrine problems in patients with transfusion-dependent thalassemia. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of Diabetes Mellitus and Impaired Fasting Glucose in Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia patients. METHODOLOGY: STUDY DESIGN: Cross sectional study. STUDY SETTING: Study was conducted for duration of 6 Months from July 2018 to December 2018 in Center for Thalassemia Care and Patho- Care laboratory Rahim Yar Khan. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Convenient sampling technique was used. Patients of Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia bearing age more than 10 years were studied. Fasting Plasma Glucose was determined by taking Fasting Blood samples of 151 patients of Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia. A Questionnaire was designed and all data collected was recorded. SPSS version 20 used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Total of 151 patients were included in the study. Females were 39.1%) and males were 60.9 %. Mean age of patients was 13.32 ± 2.08 years. Overall 2.0 % patients had Diabetes while 4.6% patients had Impaired Fasting Glucose. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicated that frequency of Impaired Fasting Glucose is higher as compared to Diabetes Mellitus in Transfusion ransfusion Dependent Thalassemia patients.BACKGROUND: Transfusion-dependent thalassemia is one of the most common genetic disorders in young people in every community in the world.
