Abstract
(The Rationale behind Count Sámuel Teleki’s Expedition to Africa) Explorer of Central Africa, Transylvanian magnate Samuel Teleki cannot be regarded as a major representative of any scientifi c fi eld of study. However, in the wake of his expedition to Kenya, count Teleki is given a prominent position among the distinguished natural scientists of his time. My present research focuses on the circumstances of count Teleki’s trip to Africa and aims to unfold the rationale behind his decision to explore „the Dark Continent” by using information from the newspapers of the time, biographical works and the count’s own autobiographical writings.
