GROUP COUNSELING AND SOLUTION FOCUSED BRIEF COUNSELING: A SYNERGISTIC EFFECT

Abstract
focused brief counseling and group counseling have been fullfilling the expectancies of clients and current mental health services effectively with their different therapeutical aspects. Group counseling has diverse qualites such as the therapeutic influence of group dynamics on members and positive modifications of members’ emotions, values and attributes. Solution focused brief counseling is meanwhile a proper option for mental health systems, considering its relatively short sessions as well as being more than innovative, focusing on constructing solutions rather than analyzing the clients’ problems. It seems that group counseling may serve as an established and valid platform for solution focused brief counseling approach which is considered innovational and up to date, thus meeting many counseling needs. In this article, utilizing solution focused counseling principles and techniques, such as miracle question, exceptional questions and doing what works principle, in group settings are evaluated, unfolding this type of a synergistic approach’s possible benefits. As a result of this research some limitations and possible benefits of solution focused brief group counseling are introduced.
