GUERRA CIVIL, ÉXODO Y EXILIO. LA AVENTURA DEL “STANBROOK”, ALICANTE-ORÁN, MARZO 1939

Journal Title: Estudios Románicos - Year 2007, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

In March of 1939 the total collapse of the Spanish republic took place, with its corresponding massive exodus of those who, having collaborated in some way with the fallen régime, were able to reach safety abroad. Indeed, and without any doubt, the Stanbrook ship was involved in one of the most spectacular fl ights and, in addition, the very last important one, in which on March 28th 2.638 people could escape from Alicante to Oran (Algeria). This paper analyzes the dramatic circumstances of these refugees’ exile before, during and after such a gruelling travel to their destination.
