Abstract
The author of the article in a synthetic way describes 350-year old history of the most elite and recognizable regiment of the Danish Army. Since its beginnings, the Royal Guard has been closely connected with the monarchy, its traditions, and in spite of the time passed and changes taking place in contemporary world, it has been a guarantee of the independent Danish state for centuries. According to the author, the Royal Guards is not only a military unit but also a kind of social phenomenon connecting both educational and patriotic elements. Characteristic bearskin of soldiers taking guard at the most representative landmarks of Copenhagen contributes to their recognition among both local residents and tourists. Watching the guards' colourful uniforms, it is hard to believe that these soldiers serve a role of a front line combat unit who might be seen in Iraq or Afghanistan Soldiers belonging to former Guards associations, both in Denmark and spread all over the world, are a perfect example of positive impact of the Armed Forces from behind their structures on the society. The article also features valuable remarks on the structure of the conscription binding in the Danish Defence.
