Journal Title: Journal of Animal Production Advances - Year 2015, Vol 5, Issue 1

Abstract

The experiment was conducted at Adamawa State University Livestock Teaching and Research Farm Mubi, from May to June 2013. The study was to assess the Haematological parameters and live weight changes of Yankasa sheep fed diet containing cotton seed cake and maize offal before grazing. The result of haematology revealed that the mean BSP, Hb (gldl), PCV (%), RBC (×1012/µL) and WBC (×109/L) were 6.4142±0.0497, 8.7125±0.0864, 27.365±0.1225, 3.8800±4.014 and 6.7858±4.522 respectively before treatment and 6.6967±0.0497, 9.4083±0.0864, 28.800±0.1225, 3.9325±4.014 and 6.8683±4.522 respectively after treatment. The haematological parameters observed showed significant differences (P<0.05) before and after the treatment. The treatment means for live weight changes were 2.03kg, 2.67kg, 4.0kg, and 4.33kg for treatment 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively. There were significant differences (P<0.05) in the supplemental group of sheep than those in a control group without supplementation. This study has reported haematological parameters and live weight changes of yankasa sheep which could serves as baseline information for comparison in conditions of nutrient deficiency, physiological and health status of Yankasa Sheep in Northeastern part of Nigeria.
