Happiness in the game - Johan Huizinga's „Homo Ludens“ between wisdom and folly

Abstract

The world of play is a world of its own, a world as-if, a world of phantasy, voluntary pretense, imagination, strategic thinking, acting, with moments of communication and risk, success and happiness, as well as moments of and disenchantment can happen: Such is life! It is not easy to give an inspiring lecture about „play“ today. First of all, the subject is well-known. At the first glance it is difficult to say about play anything more than previous authors ever have said about play. As an anthropological variable the pattern of play behaviour has been rather static for thousands of years. However the culture of play has been multifarious. Every time has its jokes. Psychoanalysis can explain the close relation between play and joke. Today internet conveys an unimaginable variation of play facilities people may use by computer, mobile, or game console. It seems, in view of this, children’s play has become more and more valueless, boring, outdated in its traditional meaning. But this view is not quite correct. Still is play important for children of the preschool age, still are classic games played in sports, also in schools and in leisure time. There exist many niches for play also in modern society. This makes sense if wie consider the paradoxes of play against the background of the paradoxes of modern life. <br/><br/>
