Health and Life Expectancy in Ukraine in the Context of Innovative Employment

Abstract

The aim of the article is to explore health and life expectancy in Ukraine in the context of innovative employment. We analyzed the differences in self-rated health by work characteristics using data from World Value Survey 2011. We found that workers doing creative tasks reported having good health more often than those doing routine tasks. Healthy life expectancy for males and females at age 20 and over was calculated using Sullivan’s method, with years of life lived divided into healthy and unhealthy. The results indicate that women live longer but spend more years in a poor health compared to men. There is a large burden of ill-health among women: the proportion of years lived with poor health to total persons-years is 13,1 % for males and 20,7 % for females (at age 20 and over). Several indicators of mortality in working ages (20 to 64 years) are calculated based on data from State Statistics Service of Ukraine. They show a high toll of premature mortality in Ukraine: almost 40 % of 20-year-old men and 16 % of 20-year-old women in Ukraine die before they reach 65. Premature mortality causes a very high labor cost.
