Health in indigenous peoples: primary care and interculturality

Abstract

The Indigenous nations and peoples have worrying indices in terms of health care, as well as other historical shortcomings related to land ownership, food, education and, in general, the exercise of their rights, Established by international organizations, such as the UN and WHO-PAHO. In Ecuador, in accordance with the constitutional legal order, health policies have been implemented that include the general guideline of an intercultural approach to primary care that incorporates ancestral knowledge and practices in primary care. A documentary review examines the current health and primary care situation among indigenous ethnic groups in Ecuador. This analysis provides considerations for public health policies, intercultural training of health team professionals and, in particular, articulation of the beliefs, knowledge and practices of ethnic culture for primary health care.
